Hudson's Bay Company

This guide was last updated in 2012

Sarah Millican’s dramatic story took her all the way to the depths of Canada during a harsh winter.

The comedian was on the trail of her 4 x great grandfather, John Malcolm, an employee of the Hudson’s Bay Company. Sarah had thought all of her ancestors were from the north-east of England but John came from further afield, having been born in the Scottish Highlands.

It was while working for the Hudson’s Bay Company that John suffered a terrible fate. Sarah was deeply saddened to learn that her ancestor had to have both of his feet amputated after contracting frostbite whilst out in the wilderness of Ontario.

John was pensioned off and returned to the UK to spend the rest of his days in Durham.

Who Do You Think You Are? lead researcher Sara Khan shares her top tips for tracing ancestors who, like John, were employed by this historic company...
