Passenger lists

This guide was last updated in 2010

Due to the fact that passenger records were not part of the document-keeping system in South Africa, these lists are scattered around, although some can now be found online.

Government gazettes housed in the Cape Town Archives are a good place to start. There are also newspapers (in the National Library), which published daily passenger lists in the 1800s, as well as the Natal Witness in the Pietermaritzburg Archives.

Generally only first- and second-class passengers were listed. You can find out more at Family Search and SA Genealogy.
